How to Find a Therapist That Fits You
Trying to find a therapist can feel a bit like shopping for jeans online.
You know you need a good fit—but until you try a few on, how can you tell what’s going to work? And when what you actually need is someone to help you untangle your thoughts, explore big emotions, or just feel like yourself again, the pressure to “choose right” can feel overwhelming.
And the truth is - connection matters.
In fact, research shows that the single biggest predictor of success in therapy isn’t the type of therapy used—it’s the relationship between you and your therapist. If you feel seen, heard, and understood, you’re far more likely to make progress.
So if the connection is key... where do you even start?
Start with a consultation.
Most therapists offer a free 15- to 30-minute consultation. No paperwork, no commitment—just a conversation to see how it feels. Think of it as a “vibe check.”
One client once told me she picked her first therapist because their photo “looked friendly.” Not a terrible starting point! But after a few sessions filled with awkward silences and polite nodding, she realized she needed someone who could gently challenge her, not just smile supportively.
The consultation is your chance to notice:
Do they listen to you?
Do they explain their approach in a way that feels clear?
Do you feel like you could open up—even just a little?
Trust that gut feeling. Therapy works best when you feel safe, not scrutinized. If it doesn’t feel like you can be real with this person, it’s okay to move on.
Connection Plus Credentials.
Yes, training and licensing matter. Alberta is still finding its footing with regulating counselling therapists, so it’s even more important for clients to know what to look for. Generally, you’ll want to look for a Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC), a Registered Psychologist (R Psych), or a master’s level social worker with an emphasis in clinical work (RCSW). All are required to have master’s degrees and have completed extensive practicums along with other requirements to maintain good standing. CCC’s are able to practice throughout Canada.
It’s Okay to Shop Around.
Therapy isn’t a one-size-fits-all deal. If the first person you talk to doesn’t feel right, that’s not failure - that’s information. A good therapist will understand that fit matters.
Give yourself permission to try a few. You’re not ghosting anyone. You’re finding what works, and the right therapist for you will want that too.
The Best Time to Start? Yesterday. The Second Best? Today.
A lot of people wait until things are really hard before reaching out. But therapy isn’t just for crisis mode. It’s also for the slow build toward clarity, confidence, and feeling more like you again.
So if something’s been nudging you-curiosity, frustration, burnout, or just a quiet “I think I need someone to talk to”-listen to that.
Book a consultation. Ask questions. See how it feels.
